The basis of this painting came from the thought of letting our self fall free from social restrictions which hinder our personal and emotional development, but realizing at the same time that when this Free Fall is happening that these constant unspoken and spoken norms and rules can be partly helpful guidelines
This a subject that has always interested me, how we all deal with rules and regulations and in this case mainly the unspoken rules and regulations. They hang in the air, they are always there and are continuously affecting us in an either positive or negative way. In this painting the warm and bright colours, the very clear lines and shapes are representing the positive side of the title.
This painting expresses that “inner tempest” that “inner storm” when feelings just take over (represented with the colours yellow, orange, red, deep red and variations of purple) until calmness (light blue) eventually settles it all down again.
everybody contains emotions inside (the containment is shown by the deep dark purple in the painting) and everybody contains different emotions, hence the mix of colour and shapes. What I want to say in this painting is that with the awareness of contained emotions also comes the awareness that the latter has an effect upon the emotions which are not contained.
The different tones of red, yellow and rust brown in this painting represent the liveliness and activities in a city, at the same time the windowless houses implicate how lonely and cold a city can be for the individual. The coldness is underlined by the cold blue of the canal.
